Time and a Half (1.5×) Explained

Time and a Half (1.5× Overtime) – Australia

Time and a half is a 150% loading paid for the first block of overtime in many Australian awards.

If your base rate is $30/hr:
1.5× = $45/hr

When Time-and-a-Half Applies

Typical patterns:

  1. First 2–3 hours of overtime

This is the most common usage.

  1. Working outside the “span of hours”

E.g., before 6am, after 6pm — award-dependent.

  1. Sixth consecutive day

Retail, hospitality, cleaning and security awards use this pattern.

  1. Short-notice extensions to shifts

When you’re held back after a rostered finish time.

Examples of Time-and-a-Half Pay

Base rate: $28/hr

Time-and-a-half:
28 × 1.5 = $42/hr

If you work 3 hours at time-and-a-half:
3 × 42 = $126

Annual Impact Example

If you average 3 hours/week at 1.5×:

3 × (base × 1.5)

Using $30/hr base:
3 × 45 = 135 weekly
135 × 52 = $7,020 extra per year
